Self-Care Tips
Talk to your health care team.
They can recommend nutritious food choices throughout therapy. Staying nourished and adequately hydrated is important during therapy. If you have questions or concerns about how to maintain a healthy diet, your health care team can help.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Be sure to drink 1 liter or four 8-ounce glasses of clear, nonalcoholic fluids each day.
Avoid alcohol or caffeinated drinks.
These beverages can cause your body to lose important fluids.
Eat small, healthy meals.
While being treated for cancer, your calorie needs could change. Nutrition tips for people with cancer typically focus on eating more high-calorie and high protein foods. Discuss the amount of calories you need during your therapy with your health care team; additional nutritional supplements may be needed. Check with your health care team to determine if nutritional supplements are right for you.
Be sure to eat and drink enough calories to maintain your weight.
When planning meals:
- Avoid spices and coarse or acidic foods, as they can irritate your mouth and throat
- Avoid sugary snacks, which can cause tooth decay
- Avoid very hot or very cold foods
- Moisten foods with gravies and sauces to make them easier to eat
Get plenty of rest.
- Try to sleep at the same time(s) each day
- Create a quiet environment for sleep
- Create a bedtime ritual like reading or taking a warm bath
- Use deep breathing exercises to relax
Dental care
- Tell your dentist about your therapy. He or she may recommend completing any dental work you might need prior to starting radiation therapy
- Your dentist may also have recommendations for maintaining your oral health during treatment
- Brush your teeth and gums after meals and at bedtime using a soft toothbrush and a nonirritating toothpaste
- Talk with your health care team for suggestions on how to rinse your mouth
Make sure to talk regularly with your health care team about how you are feeling and any side effects you may be experiencing before, during or after therapy. If you have additional questions about dry mouth, ETHYOL® or your radiation therapy, ask your health care team. Communication is Key!
