How is head and neck cancer treated?
Questions to ask your physician

Cancer develops when abnormal cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control.1 Head and neck cancer often begins in the cells that line the mouth, sinuses, and throat.2 This includes the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, roof of the mouth, voice box, and salivary glands, as well as other areas in the head and neck.2

How is head and neck cancer treated?

Only a physician can determine what treatments are right for his or her patients.3 Treatment recommendations vary from patient to patient because physicians will take into account the location of a patient's tumor and how advanced it is, as well as a patient's overall health before deciding what treatment is appropriate.

Questions to ask your physician4

The questions listed below are intended to help patients initiate discussions with their physicians and nurses after they have been diagnosed with cancer. This list is only a small sample of questions; patients should write down questions of their own to discuss with their physician or nurse. It is important for patients to feel comfortable asking their healthcare providers any question related to their treatment and overall health.
What kind of cancer do I have?
What stage of cancer do I have?
What are my treatment options?
What outcome should I expect from treatment?
What are the risks of the treatment?
Could you describe what the treatment will be like?
How would my time be scheduled for this treatment?
What side effects can I expect from treatment?
Could I have long-term side effects from treatment? If so, please
describe what they may be like.
Is there anything I can do to help minimize these side effects?
How long will it take for me to recover from treatment?
When can I go back to work after treatment?
