Reasons to Help Protect Against Xerostomia
  • The parotid glands are particularly sensitive to irradiation1
  • Damage to the parotid glands during and following radiation therapy (RT) results in decreased saliva production1
RTOG Grading Tool for Late-Effect Xerostomia2
GRADE 1 GRADE 2 GRADE 3

Symptomatic (dry or thick saliva) without significant dietary alteration; unstimulated saliva flow > 0.2 mL/min

Symptomatic and significant oral intake alteration (copious water, other lubricants, diet limited to purees and/or soft, moist foods); unstimulated saliva 0.1 to 0.2 mL/min

Symptoms leading to inability to adequately aliment orally; IV fluids, tube feedings, or TPN indicated; unstimulated saliva < 0.1 mL/min
