ETHYOL Use in Head and Neck Cancer

Patient Preparation


  • ADEQUATE HYDRATION
    • Patients must be adequately hydrated prior to ETHYOL® infusion1
    • The hydration status of a patient should be monitored
    • Patients who are hypotensive or dehydrated should not receive ETHYOL1
  • ANTIEMETIC PROPHYLAXIS
    • Appropriate prophylactic antiemetics and hydration are essential1
    • Antiemetic medication should be administered prior to and in conjunction with ETHYOL1
      • Oral 5HT3 receptor antagonists, alone or in combination with other antiemetics, have been used effectively in the radiation therapy setting
  • MONITORING BLOOD PRESSURE
    • Monitor blood pressure at least before and immediately after the infusion, and thereafter as clinically indicated1
    • During ETHYOL infusion patients should be kept in supine position1
    • Hypotension that requires interruption of ETHYOL infusion should be treated with1
      • normal saline using a separate IV line
      • postural management of the patient (supine or Trendelenburg position)
    • If blood pressure returns to normal within 5 minutes and the patient is asymptomatic, ETHYOL infusion may be restarted, so that the full dose can be administered1
